  • What is counselling and psychotherapy?

    Therapy, usually referred to as psychotherapy or counselling, is the practice of consulting with a therapist to treat mental health concerns by developing adaptive thinking and coping skills.


     In order to address any recognised problematic behaviours, beliefs, interpersonal concerns, and/or physical symptoms, this procedure comprises collaboration between the patient and therapist throughout sessions to develop therapeutic goals.


  • Who can receive counselling?

    Counselling is available to anyone who needs it and is struggling with a personal issue. No issue is too big or too small to ask for support.



  • How long is a therapy session?

    In the first session, it can be expected to be 1.5 hours where the therapist will gather information on the client’s history, background information and presenting issues. The subsequent sessions will be an hour.

  • Do you prescribe medicine?

    We are a psychological centre with psychologists,medications are usually prescribed by psychiatrists. However, we do provide referral letter.

  • Can I see a psychiatrist?

    We are a psychological centre with psychologists, we have no psychiatrists here at the moment.

  • What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

    The main distinction between the two is that a psychiatrist has received medical training and is qualified to write prescriptions. A psychologist cannot recommend medicine because they are not licensed as doctors.

  • Can an underage person seek therapy?

    Yes, however a legal guardian is required to be present to sign consent forms and other legal documents. In some cases, a legal guardian will need to be present for the therapist to gather background information on the client.

  • Do you offer online therapy?

    • Yes we do. Online therapy sessions are also offered for clients who are interested in our therapy services but are not currently residing in Malaysia. 

    •  For online sessions, the payment for the session will need to be made before the session.
  • Is my privacy/confidentiality protected in therapy sessions?

    Content of therapy sessions are strictly private and confidential. Information will only be released to others with the client’s written permission, with three (3) exceptions: 


    1. The client is a potential danger to self and others.
    2. The child or elder abuse is suspected.
    3. Where mandated by the court or law, information may be shared without written consent.
  • What to expect and what should I bring/prepare for my therapy?

    Expectation:

    • In the first session, it is advised to come in 10-15 minutes earlier to fill out the consent forms and other official forms. In therapy the therapist will discuss issues that have been distressing the client or issues that the client would like to explore. Then, the therapist would work with the client to set therapy goals and work together on it. At the end of the session, the therapist will discuss the recommended treatment plan.

    To bring/prepare

    • What to bring – The client is not required to bring anything in particular. But if there is a referral letter from another organisation or reports that would be useful for the therapist, it can be brought to the session if it's relevant to review.
  • Will I feel better after my first appointment?

    The progress and symptom improvement usually happens between 6 to 12 sessions, depending on the complexity of issues, the client’s active participation and practice of coping strategies outside of sessions.

  • What other services do you offer?

    • Other than psychotherapy and psychological assessments, we also offer mental health screening (free 15 minutes), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), talks and seminars.

  • Do you accept debit/credit cards?

    Yes we do accept all payment methods, eg: debit/credit card, cash,TnG ewallet, ShopeePay,GrabPay, QR Pay,bank transfers

  • Do you accept insurance?

    At the moment we are not contracted with any insurance providers. The client will be expected to make payment through cash, card or online transaction after the session.

  • What is the rescheduling/cancellation policy?

    Appointments are made with the Mentem’s whatsapp number, based on the clinical psychologist’s availability. If you would like to reschedule/cancel your session, you may do so by contacting us. You will need to make the changes to the scheduled appointment at least 24-hours’ notice before the appointment. For any changes made less than 24 hours before the appointment, the session will be charged for the full hour session.
